그린 랩그로운 다이아몬드 고르는 법｜사진만으로 선택할 수 없는 이유

홍콩에서 온 후보 스톤, 색과 투명성 그리고 브릴리언스를 읽는 시간

홍콩 출장을 앞두고 거래처에서 몇 점의 그린 랩그로운 다이아몬드 후보 사진과 영상을 보내왔습니다.

그중 한 점에서 시선이 오래 머물렀습니다. 오벌 형태를 따라 번지는 선명한 초록빛. 화면 속 스톤은 각도에 따라 밝은 잎의 색과 깊은 숲의 색을 오가며 서로 다른 표정을 보여주었습니다.

그러나 강렬한 첫인상만으로 스톤을 선택하지는 않습니다.

마음을 끄는 보석과 오래 보아도 아름다운 보석은 반드시 같지 않기 때문입니다.

홍콩 거래처에서 보내온 여러 후보 가운데 한 점. 아직 최종 선택 전입니다.

🔹 좋은 초록빛은 한 가지 색으로 머물지 않습니다

컬러 다이아몬드를 볼 때 가장 먼저 다가오는 것은 색입니다. 하지만 단순히 초록색이 강한지만 보는 것은 아닙니다.

빛을 받았을 때 색이 맑게 열리는지, 어두운 부분에서도 초록빛의 깊이가 살아 있는지, 스톤 전체에 색이 자연스럽게 이어지는지를 살펴봅니다.

지나치게 밝으면 색의 존재감이 옅어지고, 너무 어두우면 빛이 충분히 되돌아오지 못합니다. 좋은 색은 진하면서도 답답하지 않고, 깊으면서도 빛을 잃지 않습니다.

색에는 힘이 있어야 하지만, 그 힘이 투명함을 가려서는 안 됩니다.

🔹 투명성과 브릴리언스가 만드는 깊이

투명성이 좋은 스톤은 표면만 반짝이지 않습니다. 빛이 보석 안으로 들어가 여러 면을 지나 다시 밖으로 나오면서, 내부에 공간이 열린 듯한 깊이를 만듭니다.

브릴리언스(Brilliance)는 스톤이 움직일 때 더욱 분명하게 드러납니다. 오벌 다이아몬드를 천천히 돌리면 밝았던 면이 잠시 어두워지고, 다른 면에서 다시 빛이 살아납니다.

흰빛이 짧고 선명하게 되돌아오고 초록빛이 그 뒤를 이어 번질 때, 스톤은 평면적인 색을 넘어 입체적인 표정을 갖게 됩니다.

색이 시선을 붙잡고, 투명성이 보석의 안쪽을 열며, 브릴리언스가 그 빛을 다시 밖으로 돌려보냅니다.

이 세 가지가 조화를 이룰 때 스톤은 비로소 자신의 얼굴을 갖습니다.

🔹 선택은 첫눈보다 조금 더 오래 걸립니다

화면에서 아름답게 보이는 스톤도 실제 자연광에서는 다른 인상을 줄 수 있습니다. 반대로 사진에서는 다소 어둡게 보였던 스톤이 움직임 속에서 놀라운 빛을 보여주기도 합니다.

그래서 저는 한 장의 사진이나 눈에 띄는 조건만으로 결론을 내리지 않습니다. 후보들을 같은 빛 아래에서 비교하고, 방향을 바꾸었을 때 색과 빛이 어떻게 달라지는지 충분히 살펴봅니다.

마음이 먼저 반응하더라도 한 걸음 물러서서 다시 바라보는 것. 무엇이 화려한지를 넘어 무엇이 오래 아름다울지를 생각하는 것. 그것이 제가 보석을 선택하는 방식입니다.

🔹 아직 선택하지 않은 한 점

이 초록빛 다이아몬드는 아직 최종 선택된 스톤이 아닙니다.

화면 너머에서 보이던 초록빛과 투명함이 눈앞에서도 같은 깊이를 보여줄지, 움직일 때의 브릴리언스가 오래 시선을 머물게 할지 직접 확인하려 합니다.

좋은 소싱은 많은 정보를 보여주는 일이 아니라, 수많은 조건 속에서 한 점의 진정한 아름다움을 알아보는 일이라고 생각합니다.

과연 이 스톤은 최종 선택을 받게 될까요?

Reading Color, Transparency, and Brilliance in a Candidate Stone from Hong Kong

Ahead of my upcoming trip to Hong Kong, one of my suppliers sent me photos and videos of several green lab-grown diamond candidates.

One stone, in particular, held my attention. Its vivid green color spread beautifully across the oval shape, shifting between the freshness of bright leaves and the depth of a forest as the angle changed.

Still, I do not choose a stone based only on a powerful first impression.

A jewel that catches the eye at first glance is not always the one that remains beautiful over time.

🔹 A Fine Green Never Remains Just One Color

Color is the first quality we notice in a colored diamond. But I do not simply ask whether the green is strong.

I look at whether the color opens clearly under light, whether it retains depth in darker areas, and whether it flows naturally throughout the stone.

If the color is too light, it can lose its presence. If it is too dark, the light entering the diamond may not return sufficiently. A beautiful color should be intense without feeling heavy and deep without losing its light.

Color should have strength, but that strength should never conceal transparency.

🔹 The Depth Created by Transparency and Brilliance

A transparent stone does more than sparkle on the surface. Light enters the diamond, travels through its facets, and returns to the eye, creating a sense of depth and space within the stone.

Brilliance becomes even clearer when the diamond moves. As an oval diamond is turned slowly, one facet may darken for a moment while another comes alive with light.

When crisp white light returns and green color follows behind it, the stone develops a three-dimensional expression that goes beyond color alone.

Color captures the eye, transparency opens the interior, and brilliance returns the light to the viewer.

When these three qualities come together, the stone reveals its own distinctive character.

🔹 A Thoughtful Choice Takes Longer Than a First Glance

A stone that looks beautiful on a screen may appear different in natural light. In contrast, a diamond that seems slightly dark in a still photograph may reveal remarkable brilliance in motion.

That is why I do not reach a conclusion from a single photograph or one impressive feature. I compare the candidates under the same lighting and observe how their color and brilliance change from different directions.

Even when a stone first speaks to the heart, I step back and look again. I consider not only what appears dazzling now, but what will remain beautiful over time.

That is how I choose a gemstone.

🔹 A Stone Not Yet Chosen

This green diamond has not yet been selected.

I want to see whether the color and transparency visible through the screen reveal the same depth in person—and whether its brilliance in motion continues to hold the eye.

Good sourcing is not about revealing every piece of information. It is about recognizing true beauty in one stone among countless possibilities.

Will this diamond become the final choice?
