Why Can Two One-Carat Diamonds Have Such Different Prices?

Why Can Two One-Carat Diamonds Have Such Different Prices?

When people look at a diamond, one of the first questions they often ask is, “How many carats is it?”

But even two diamonds of the same one-carat weight can have very different prices.

Diamonds are usually evaluated by the 4Cs: Carat Weight, Color, Clarity, and Cut.

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight.
But the same weight does not mean the same color, clarity, brilliance, or value.

Let’s begin with color.

Diamonds are graded from D to Z. D, E, and F are considered colorless or near-colorless top grades. From there, the scale continues through G, H, I, and J, where a faint yellow or brown tint may gradually become more noticeable.

In the past, people often heard that “G color is a good diamond.” And it can certainly be a beautiful and sensible choice.

Today, however, buyers tend to compare color, clarity, and cut more carefully. That is why two diamonds of the same one-carat weight can have a significant difference in price.

Clarity is another important factor.

A diamond may contain tiny natural characteristics, often called inclusions. These can include crystals, feathers, or clouds. The smaller and less visible they are, the higher the clarity grade tends to be.

Common clarity grades include:

VVS1 and VVS2
VS1 and VS2
SI1 and SI2

However, choosing the highest grade is not always the only answer.

It is also important to see where an inclusion is located, whether it is visible to the naked eye, and whether it affects the diamond’s brightness.

Diamond prices are influenced by international reference prices, market conditions, exchange rates, and many other factors. But the final value of a diamond cannot be decided by the numbers on a grading report alone.

Even diamonds with similar grades can look different depending on their cut, fluorescence, the position of their inclusions, and most importantly, how they reflect light in real life.

That is why I always recommend looking at the grading report first, but seeing the actual diamond before making a final decision.

A good diamond is not only one with beautiful numbers on paper. It is one that looks clear, lively, and beautiful to your own eyes.

In my next post, I will talk about cut—the factor that has one of the greatest effects on a diamond’s brilliance.
