What is the first thing you should look for when choosing a pearl?

Many people think that simply checking whether a pearl is saltwater or freshwater is enough when making a purchase. Of course, the type of pearl matters. However, speaking from the perspective of someone who has handled pearls for a long time, one of the most crucial factors determining a pearl's value is its Luster.

Even among saltwater pearls, the difference in quality can be vast. A fine pearl emits a subtle yet profound glow even from a distance. It feels as if the light is radiating from deep within the pearl itself. On the other hand, a lower-quality pearl lacks this vibrant radiance, even if its surface appears clean.

That is why I always tell my clients: 

"Look at the luster before the size."

In the actual market, many products are sold simply under the name of 'saltwater pearls,' but the quality varies immensely. When selecting a pearl, you must look beyond the type and consider the luster, surface condition, shape, and color all together.

Pearls possess a charm entirely different from diamonds. Unlike the dazzling brilliance of a diamond, a pearl is a gemstone that expresses elegance and dignity. This is why it has been loved by royalty and aristocratic societies for centuries. Particularly, as Chanel actively incorporated pearls into fashion, they became a representative gemstone loved by women all over the world.

Through my decades of handling pearls, I have come to realize something: a good pearl is not just a simple accessory, but a special gemstone that adds confidence and grace to the wearer. 진주를 선택할 때는 단순히 종류만 볼 것이 아니라 광택, 표면 상태, 형태, 색상 등을 함께 살펴보아야 합니다.
