I am Chanel Park, a GIA Graduate Gemologist.

Many people believe that earning a GIA diploma automatically makes them a jewelry expert. However, I often tell people:

"A GIA diploma is like a driver's license."

Having a driver's license does not make someone an experienced driver overnight. Real driving skills are developed through years of experience—driving in heavy rain, navigating difficult roads, and learning from real-life situations.

The jewelry business is no different.

A diploma is only the beginning.

The real education starts in the marketplace.

Over the years, I have seen many young graduates open jewelry stores immediately after completing their studies.

They fill their showcases with beautiful products, but they have not yet built a customer base.

Month after month, rent, salaries, manufacturing costs, and operating expenses continue to grow.

Eventually, some are forced to sell their inventory at a loss and close their businesses.

That is why I always say:

"Build your customers first, then open your store."

A business is not built by certificates.

It is built by people.

Trust and relationships are the true foundation of success.

The ability to choose fine gemstones follows the same principle.

It cannot be learned from certificates alone.

Especially when it comes to colored gemstones, every person is different.

Skin tone, body type, personality, and natural presence all influence which gemstone will look most beautiful on an individual.

A truly skilled professional understands these subtle differences.

The right gemstone can enhance a person's natural beauty, complement their unique character, and sometimes even draw attention away from imperfections.

Helping clients find a gemstone that perfectly suits them—and leaves them with no regrets—is one of the most important responsibilities of a true jewelry professional.

The true value of a gemstone is not found on a grading report.

It is found in the eye of the beholder and in the moments when that gemstone becomes part of someone's life.

안녕하세요. GIA Graduate Gemologist 샤넬 박입니다.

보석을 공부하는 많은 분들은 GIA 자격증을 취득하면 이제 나도 전문가가 되었다고 생각합니다. 하지만 저는 종종 이렇게 말합니다.

"GIA는 운전면허증과 같습니다."

운전면허증을 땄다고 바로 베테랑 운전자가 되는 것은 아닙니다. 폭우가 쏟아지는 날도 운전해 보고, 험한 산길도 달려 보아야 진짜 실력이 생깁니다. 보석 감정도 마찬가지입니다. 자격증은 시작일 뿐이고 진짜 공부는 현장 경험에서 우러나오지요.

저는 GIA를 졸업한 뒤 곧바로 보석 매장부터 열었다가 어려움을 겪는 사람들을 많이 보았습니다. 고객은 없는데 진열장만 가득 채우고, 월세와 인건비는 매달 나갑니다. 결국 재고를 헐값에 정리하며 문을 닫는 경우도 적지 않죠.

그래서 저는 늘 말합니다. "먼저 고객을 만들고, 그 다음 가게를 여십시오."

사업은 자격증이 하는 것이 아닙니다. 사람이 하는 것입니다. 고객의 신뢰가 쌓일 때 비로소 사업도 함께 성장합니다.

보석을 고르는 눈도 마찬가지입니다. 감정서 만으로는 절대 생기지 않습니다. 특히 유색 보석은 사람마다 타고난 체형, 피부색, 풍기는 인상이 모두 다르기에 더욱 그렇습니다. 보석으로 단점을 우아하게 가려주고, 고유의 매력을 최고조로 끌어올리는 것. 개별 고객의 아우라에 완벽하게 어울리는 보석을 찾아주어 단 한 점의 후회도 없게 만드는 것. 이것이 수많은 보석과 사람을 직접 겪어내며 만들어진 진짜 전문가의 역할입니다.

보석의 진짜 가치는 종이 감정서 위에 있지 않습니다. 그 보석을 바라보는 안목과, 그 보석이 당신의 삶에서 빛나는 순간에 있습니다.
