Should Old Jewelry Be Melted or Reborn?
Designs may change with time.
But the light and stories held in fine jewelry can continue into the next generation.
Many things in life wear down and change over time.
They may be forgotten when trends pass. Sometimes, they simply disappear from our lives.
But gold and diamonds are different.
When they are cared for well, they can remain with us for many years.
Today, I was deeply impressed while visiting an exhibition at the Leeum Museum of Art.
I saw gold rings, earrings, and belt ornaments from Korea’s Three Kingdoms period. It was hard to believe that they were made thousands of years ago. The details were delicate and beautifully made.
The pieces looked a little heavier than modern jewelry, but the rings and decorations were surprisingly similar to jewelry we still wear today.
That day, I saw for myself that beautiful materials and good design can live beyond their own time.
Of course, a design that once looked beautiful may later feel old-fashioned.
But the meaning of the jewelry does not disappear.
The original gemstones can be kept and redesigned into a ring, earrings, or a brooch that better fits today’s style.
Gold is the same.
Old gold jewelry can be melted and made into something new. The design may change, but the gold, the gemstones, and the memories remain.
For many years, I have redesigned jewelry that people received from their parents or grandparents—old rings, gold bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.
They did not want to throw those pieces away.
They wanted to keep the love and memories inside them, while making them beautiful and wearable again.
So I have tried to keep the meaning of the original gold and gemstones, while creating new jewelry that suits each person’s taste and daily life.
Redesigning jewelry is not simply about changing an old design.
It is about carrying family memories—from grandmother to mother, and then to me and my children—into the present.
A piece of jewelry that is redesigned in this way can become a small family heirloom for the next generation.
Jewelry also gives women a quiet kind of strength.
Even without dressing extravagantly, wearing one beautiful piece of jewelry can bring confidence and a gentle sense of presence.
It can remind us to value ourselves and add grace to an ordinary day.
In a world where so much changes and disappears, there is something meaningful about carrying light, memory, and time into the next generation.
That is why I believe jewelry continues to be loved across generations.
