 지난 24회에서는 천연 진주가 왜 오랫동안 왕실과 귀족들만이 누릴 수 있는 특별한 보석이었는지 살펴보았습니다.

깊은 바다에서 수많은 조개를 건져 올려도 아름다운 진주 한 알을 만날 수 있을지 알 수 없었던 시대. 진주는 자연이 선택한 극소수의 사람에게만 허락된 보석이었습니다.

그런데 19세기 말, 한 남자의 집념이 진주의 역사를 바꾸기 시작합니다.

진주의 문을 연 미키모토 코키치

일본의 미키모토 코키치는 더 많은 여성이 진주를 착용할 수 있기를 꿈꾸며 진주 양식에 도전했습니다.

수많은 실패와 파산의 위기, 적조로 애써 기른 조개를 잃는 고통 속에서도 그는 포기하지 않았습니다. 그리고 마침내 1893년, 양식 진주를 만들어 내는 데 성공했습니다.

양식 진주가 시장에 등장하자 유럽의 보석 업계는 크게 술렁였습니다.

“사람이 관여해 만든 진주를 과연 진짜라고 할 수 있는가?”

그러나 양식 진주는 공장에서 만들어 낸 모조품이 아니었습니다. 사람이 진주 형성의 시작을 도울 뿐, 진주층은 살아 있는 조개 안에서 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 형성됩니다.

자연의 우연에만 기대야 했던 진주가 인간의 연구와 집념을 통해 더 많은 여성에게 다가갈 수 있게 된 것입니다.

하지만 진주가 대중에게 가까워졌다고 해서 곧바로 현대적인 패션이 된 것은 아니었습니다.

진주를 왕실의 보석에서 여성의 자유로운 스타일로 바꾼 또 한 사람이 있었으니, 바로 코코 샤넬입니다.

당시에도 진주는 여전히 부와 신분을 드러내는 단정하고 격식 있는 보석으로 여겨졌습니다.

그러나 샤넬은 진주를 완벽하게 갖춰 입은 귀부인의 장식으로만 남겨 두지 않았습니다. 단순한 검은 드레스나 편안한 니트 위에 길이가 다른 진주 목걸이를 여러 겹 늘어뜨렸고, 진짜 진주와 모조 진주를 자유롭게 섞어 착용하기도 했습니다.

제가  소장해 온 천연 진주 목걸이들입니다.
크기와 색조가 서로 다른 천연 진주들이지만, 모두 고유의 빛이 선명하게 살아 있습니다. 한 줄로도 아름답고, 여러 줄을 함께 연출하면 진주의 빛이 한층 풍성해집니다.

샤넬이 여러 겹의 진주로 여성의 자유로운 스타일을 표현했다면, 천연 진주는 한 알 한 알이 지닌 빛으로 자연의 시간과 아름다움을 보여줍니다.

모든 진주가 똑같을 필요도 없고, 값비싼 진주만이 사람을 아름답게 만드는 것도 아닙니다.

중요한 것은 어떤 보석을 소유했느냐보다, 그 보석을 자신의 옷과 분위기 속에서 어떻게 살아 있게 하느냐일 것입니다.

The man who made pearls more accessible was Kokichi Mikimoto. After countless failures, he succeeded in cultivating pearls in 1893.

At first, European jewelers strongly protested, calling cultured pearls “fake.” However, cultured pearls eventually gained worldwide recognition because their layers of nacre are formed inside living oysters.

But it was another remarkable figure who transformed pearls into a symbol of modern women’s style.

Her name was Coco Chanel.

The Woman Who Wore Pearls Differently

Chanel did not reserve pearls for aristocratic women or formal occasions.

She wore long strands of different lengths over simple black dresses and comfortable knitwear. She also boldly mixed real pearls with imitation pearls.
