In the past, only natural pearls, created by pure chance in nature, existed.

Pearl divers in the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean had to plunge into the deep sea without any oxygen tanks or modern diving gear. Holding their breath, they repeatedly engaged in a life-risking struggle to harvest oysters and return to the surface.

Yet, bringing up countless oysters never guaranteed finding a single beautiful pearl. Gathering multiple pearls of similar size, color, and luster to complete a single strand of a necklace was nothing short of a miracle.

Natural pearls were precious gems that could only be met with nature's permission, sometimes requiring people to risk their own lives.

In the records of the ancient Roman scholar Pliny the Elder, there is a very famous anecdote about Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, and a pearl.

Cleopatra wagered with Mark Antony that she could host the most expensive banquet in history. To prove Egypt's immense wealth, she supposedly removed a highly precious pearl from her earring, dropped it into a goblet of vinegar, and drank it.

Whether a pearl could actually dissolve that quickly in vinegar is still a subject of scientific debate. Therefore, it is more accurate to view this as a symbolic tale passed down through ancient records rather than a fully verified historical event.

However, this story clearly illustrates that a single pearl of the highest quality was precious enough to symbolize the wealth of an entire nation at that time.
