What Happens When a Diamond Loses Its Certificate? |

What Happens When a Diamond Loses Its Certificate?

Why I Recommend Re-Grading Before Selling a Natural Diamond

When a diamond grading report is lost, it is not simply a piece of paper that has disappeared.

Especially for a fine natural diamond, the absence of a report can cause it to be treated as an “uncertified diamond” in the resale market.

Without an objective reference, it becomes difficult to confirm whether the color is D, E, F, or G, or whether the clarity is VS or SI. As a result, the owner may receive an offer far below the diamond’s actual quality.

I once met a client who was trying to sell a diamond after losing its grading report.

The client remembered it as a fine diamond, around VS1 clarity. However, buyers said that it was difficult to discuss a grade without a report and offered a very low price. One person even suggested that it might be below G color and around SI1 or SI2 clarity.

When I examined the diamond myself, I did not believe it should be valued that low.

While studying at GIA, I trained to observe inclusions under a microscope and plot their position and shape. I learned then that, especially near grade boundaries, small differences in observation and judgment can occur.

To my eye, the diamond appeared to be around E color and VS2 clarity.

So I advised my client:

“Please do not sell it immediately. This is a fine natural diamond. Let us first send it to GIA in the United States for an official grading report.”

The final result came back as E color, VS2 clarity.

It was one grade lower than the VS1 the client remembered, but it was clearly different from the below-G-color and SI1–SI2 assessment suggested during the attempted sale.

An official grading report does not guarantee a selling price. However, it is an important starting point for confirming a diamond’s characteristics objectively and helping it receive a proper evaluation.

That is why a grading report for a fine natural diamond should be kept safely.

If the report has already been lost, it may be wiser to have the diamond re-graded by a trusted laboratory before accepting a rushed, low offer. Confirming its actual condition first can help prevent an unnecessary loss.

This article is based on my experience with natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds have different price structures and resale markets, so they should not be evaluated in exactly the same way.
