지난 26회에서는 8월의 탄생석 페리도트가 품은 싱그러운 초록빛을 살펴보았습니다.

오늘은 전 세계인이 사랑한 한 점의 푸른빛에서 이야기를 시작해 보려 합니다.

바로 다이애나 왕세자비가 착용했고, 훗날 캐서린 왕세자비에게 이어진 블루 사파이어 반지입니다.

한 시대에서 다음 세대로 이어진 반지

1981년, 다이애나 왕세자비는 깊은 푸른색의 타원형 사파이어를 다이아몬드가 둘러싼 반지를 약혼반지로 선택했습니다.

화려하면서도 지나치게 요란하지 않고, 왕실의 기품과 젊은 여성의 우아함을 함께 지닌 디자인이었습니다.

2010년 윌리엄 왕자는 어머니가 착용했던 이 반지를 캐서린에게 약혼반지로 건넸습니다.

약 12캐럿의 스리랑카산 블루 사파이어를 14개의 다이아몬드가 둘러싼 반지는 단순히 값비싼 보석이 아니었습니다.

어머니에 대한 기억과 한 가족의 시간이 다음 세대로 이어진, 의미 깊은 보석이었습니다.

사파이어는 파란색만 있을까요?

사파이어라고 하면 대부분 깊은 파란색을 떠올립니다.

그러나 사파이어에는 파란색뿐 아니라 분홍색, 노란색, 주황색, 초록색, 보라색, 무색에 가까운 것까지 다양한 색이 존재합니다.

파란색이 아닌 사파이어는 ‘팬시 컬러 사파이어’라고 부릅니다.

그중 분홍빛과 주황빛이 섬세하게 어우러진 ‘파파라차 사파이어’는 연꽃과 노을을 닮은 희귀한 색으로 특히 사랑받습니다.

그런데 사파이어에 없는 색이 하나 있습니다.

바로 빨간색입니다.

사파이어와 루비는 모두 ‘커런덤’이라는 같은 광물입니다. 붉은색 커런덤만 특별히 루비라고 부르고, 그 밖의 색을 사파이어라고 부릅니다.

전혀 다른 보석처럼 보이는 루비와 사파이어가 사실은 같은 가족이라는 점, 참 흥미롭지 않으신가요?

여러 색 가운데 제가 사랑하는 푸른 남색

사파이어에는 이처럼 다양한 색이 있지만, 저는 그중에서도 깊은 푸른 남색을 가장 아름답게 느낍니다.

밝은 곳에서는 고요한 푸른빛이 살아나고, 빛이 낮아지면 밤하늘처럼 짙고 깊은 표정을 보여주기 때문입니다.

푸른 남색은 화려함을 앞세우지 않으면서도 지적인 품격과 단정한 존재감을 드러냅니다.

좋은 보석을 고른다는 것은 가장 비싼 색을 찾는 일이 아니라, 나의 빛을 가장 아름답게 깨워 주는 색을 발견하는 일인지도 모릅니다.

In the previous post, we explored the fresh green beauty of peridot, the birthstone of August.

Today, I would like to begin with a single blue gemstone that has captured the hearts of people around the world.

It is the iconic blue sapphire engagement ring once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, and later passed on to Catherine, Princess of Wales.

A Ring Passed from One Generation to the Next

In 1981, Princess Diana chose an engagement ring featuring a deep blue oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

The design was magnificent without being overly extravagant, combining royal elegance with the graceful charm of a young woman.

In 2010, Prince William gave his mother’s ring to Catherine as their engagement ring.

Featuring an approximately 12-carat blue sapphire from Sri Lanka surrounded by 14 diamonds, the ring was far more than a valuable piece of jewelry.

It carried the memory of a beloved mother and the story of one family from one generation to the next.

The iconic blue sapphire ring passed from Diana, Princess of Wales, to Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Are Sapphires Only Blue?

When most people hear the word “sapphire,” they immediately picture a deep blue gemstone.

However, sapphires occur in many other colors, including pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, and even nearly colorless varieties.

Sapphires that are not blue are generally known as “fancy-color sapphires.”

Among them, the rare padparadscha sapphire is especially treasured for its delicate blend of pink and orange, reminiscent of a lotus blossom glowing in the evening sky.

Yet there is one color that is not called sapphire.

That color is red.

Ruby and sapphire are both varieties of the same mineral, corundum. Red corundum is given its own special name—ruby—while corundum of other colors is called sapphire.

Isn’t it fascinating that rubies and sapphires, which appear to be completely different gemstones, actually belong to the same mineral family?

The Deep Blue I Love Most

Although sapphires come in many beautiful colors, I am most drawn to a deep, rich blue.

In bright light, it reveals a calm and luminous blue. As the light softens, it takes on the mysterious depth of the night sky.

Deep blue does not demand attention with excessive brilliance. Instead, it conveys intelligence, refinement, and a quietly dignified presence.

Perhaps choosing a fine gemstone is not about finding the most expensive color, but about discovering the color that awakens our own light most beautifully.
