The Gemstone Many People Still Don’t Know: Spinel./아직 많은 사람에게 낯선 보석, 스피넬의 매력

The Beauty of Green-Blue Spinel and Its Clear Light

At a jewelry exhibition in Las Vegas, one gemstone caught my eye.

It was not quite blue, and not quite green.
It had a unique color that seemed to move between the two.
Each time it met the light, a clean and vivid sparkle came alive.

The gemstone was green-blue spinel.

At the booth, someone told me,

“Spinel is more appreciated in New York.”

Those words stayed with me.
I bought the stone and later had it made into a ring.

In Korea, spinel is still not as widely known as ruby, sapphire, or emerald.
Even when I made the ring, some people were not very familiar with the gemstone.

But spinel is not simply an “unknown stone.”
It is a beautiful colored gemstone with its own clear light and character.

Spinel is a singly refractive gemstone.
Because of this, its light can feel clean and clear.
It does not look cloudy, and when it moves under light, it shows a sharp and refined sparkle.

That was what drew me to this green-blue spinel.

A photograph cannot fully capture its beauty.
When you place it on the hand and move it gently under the light, the color between blue and green becomes much more alive.

A good gemstone is not always chosen only because of a famous name.
Sometimes, we discover a more personal beauty in a gemstone that many people have not yet noticed.

When I look at gemstones, I try not to see only price or popularity.
I look at the color, the light, the clarity, and the feeling it gives to the person who wears it.

Spinel is a gemstone worth seeing again.

It is quiet, but clear.
Unfamiliar, yet refined.
And in person, it shines far more beautifully than a photograph can show.

Perhaps a good gemstone becomes truly special not only because it is famous,
but because our own eyes and heart recognize its beauty first.

그린블루 스피넬 반지에서 느낀 색과 빛

사진으로는 다 담기지 않지만, 실제로 보면 블루와 그린 사이의 색감과 맑은 섬광이 더욱 살아납니다.

라스베가스 전시회에서 유난히 제 눈에 들어온 보석이 있었습니다.

블루 같기도 하고, 그린 같기도 한 독특한 색.
빛을 받을 때마다 맑게 살아나는 섬광.
흔히 보는 사파이어나 에메랄드와는 또 다른 분위기였습니다.

그 보석은 그린블루 스피넬이었습니다.

당시 부스 관계자가 제게 이렇게 말했습니다.

“뉴욕에서는 스피넬을 더 알아줍니다.”

그 말이 마음에 남았고, 저는 그 스톤을 구입해 반지로 만들었습니다.

한국에서는 아직 스피넬이 루비, 사파이어, 에메랄드처럼 널리 알려진 보석은 아닙니다.
실제로 제가 이 반지를 작업할 때도 스피넬이라는 보석을 낯설어하는 경우가 있었습니다.

하지만 스피넬은 단순히 “잘 알려지지 않은 보석”이 아닙니다.
자기만의 맑은 빛과 색을 가진, 아주 매력적인 컬러 스톤입니다.

스피넬은 단굴절 보석입니다.
그래서 빛이 겹쳐 보이는 느낌이 적고, 비교적 맑고 깨끗한 인상을 줍니다.
시야가 탁하지 않고, 움직일 때마다 깔끔하게 살아나는 섬광이 있습니다.

제가 이 그린블루 스피넬에 끌렸던 이유도 바로 그 빛 때문이었습니다.

사진으로는 그 느낌이 다 담기지 않습니다.
손 위에 올려 보고, 빛 아래에서 살짝 움직여 보면 블루와 그린 사이를 오가는 색감이 훨씬 더 깊게 느껴집니다.

좋은 보석은 꼭 유명한 이름만으로 선택되는 것은 아닙니다.
때로는 아직 많은 사람이 알아보지 못한 보석 안에서 더 특별한 아름다움을 발견할 때가 있습니다.

저는 보석을 볼 때 가격이나 이름만 보지 않으려고 합니다.
그 보석이 가진 색, 빛, 맑음, 그리고 사람에게 주는 분위기를 함께 봅니다.

스피넬은 그런 점에서 다시 바라볼 가치가 있는 보석입니다.

조용하지만 선명하고, 낯설지만 품격이 있습니다.
그리고 실제로 보면 사진보다 훨씬 더 아름답게 빛납니다.

어쩌면 좋은 보석은 유명해서 아름다운 것이 아니라,
내 눈과 마음이 먼저 그 진가를 알아보는 순간 더 특별해지는지도 모릅니다.
