큰맘 먹고 장만한 캐럿 반지인데, 어딘가 투박하고 밋밋해 보인 적 있으신가요?

그 비밀은 메인 스톤이 아니라, 바로 그 옆자리에 있을 수 있습니다.

UNESS ON은 보석의 가치와 주얼리 디자인, 그리고 랩그로운 다이아몬드가 열어가는 새로운 가능성을 전문가의 시선으로 기록합니다.

홍콩 주얼리 전시회를 앞두고, 이번에는 큰 메인 스톤만 보러 가는 것이 아닙니다. 반지와 목걸이의 완성도를 결정하는 작지만 중요한 모양의 다이아몬드도 함께 살펴보려 합니다.

작은 스톤이 만드는 큰 차이

보석을 볼 때 많은 사람은 먼저 큰 스톤을 봅니다.

캐럿, 컬러, 투명도, 가격. 물론 모두 중요합니다. 하지만 주얼리는 하나의 스톤만으로 완성되지 않습니다.

메인 스톤 옆에 어떤 형태의 사이드 스톤이 놓이느냐에 따라 반지의 분위기와 손 위에서 느껴지는 인상이 달라집니다.

테이퍼 바게트는 잘 재단된 테일러드 수트처럼 단정하고 클래식한 힘을 줍니다.

하프문은 메인 스톤을 양옆에서 부드럽게 감싸며 우아하고 편안한 곡선을 만듭니다.

트라페즈는 견고한 건축물과 같은 구조적인 균형감을 더하고, 마키즈와 페어는 선의 흐름을 더욱 길고 우아하게 이어줍니다.

트릴리언은 크기가 작아도 시선을 또렷하게 잡아주는 개성이 있습니다.

좋은 사이드 스톤은 ‘한 쌍’으로 보아야 합니다

이 작은 스톤들은 단순한 장식이 아닙니다. 주얼리의 선을 만들고, 메인 스톤의 분위기를 정리하며, 전체 디자인에 표정을 부여합니다.

그래서 저는 모양 있는 다이아몬드를 볼 때 이름이나 크기만 보지 않습니다.

그러나 선택지가 많아질수록 어떤 스톤을 남기고 어떤 스톤을 지나칠 것인지 판단하는 눈은 더욱 중요해집니다.

감정서의 수치만으로는 완성된 주얼리의 표정까지 알 수 없습니다. 실제로 빛을 움직여 보고, 메인 스톤과 나란히 놓아보아야 비로소 그 스톤의 역할이 보입니다.

이번 홍콩에서 찾고 싶은 것

이번 홍콩 전시회에서 제가 찾는 것은 단순히 크고 화려한 다이아몬드가 아닙니다.

메인 스톤의 품격을 조용히 받쳐주면서도, 디자인의 선과 균형을 완성해 줄 좋은 사이드 스톤 한 쌍입니다.

보석의 아름다움은 크기만으로 결정되지 않습니다.

좋은 사이드 스톤은 자신을 먼저 드러내기보다 메인 스톤의 장점을 살리고, 그 주얼리만의 인상을 오래 기억하게 합니다.

Have you ever invested in a beautiful carat-sized ring, only to find that it somehow looked heavy or lacked refinement?

The reason may not lie in the center stone, but in the small stones placed beside it.

At UNESS ON, we explore the value of gemstones, the artistry of jewelry design, and the new possibilities offered by lab-grown diamonds—all through the eye of a professional.

As I prepare for the upcoming Hong Kong Jewellery Fair, I am not going there simply to look for large center stones. I will also be searching for the smaller fancy-shaped diamonds that can determine the balance and refinement of a ring or necklace.

The Remarkable Difference a Small Stone Can Make

When looking at jewelry, most people notice the largest stone first.

Carat weight, color, clarity, and price are all important. Yet a piece of jewelry is never completed by the center stone alone.

The shape of the side stones can completely change the character of a ring and the impression it creates when worn.

Tapered baguettes bring the clean, classic strength of a beautifully tailored suit.

Half-moon diamonds gently embrace the center stone, creating soft and graceful curves.

Trapezoid cuts add a sense of architectural balance and structure, while marquise and pear shapes create a longer, more elegant flow of line.

Trillion-cut diamonds may be small, but they possess a distinctive presence that catches the eye.

Small shaped stones create rhythm and graceful lines, giving the entire piece its distinctive expression.

Side Stones Must Be Considered as a Pair

These smaller stones are not merely decorative. They shape the lines of the jewelry, refine the character of the center stone, and give the entire design its expression.

When I examine fancy-shaped diamonds, I do not look only at their names or sizes.

I consider where each stone will be placed, what role it will play, whether it will enhance the center stone—or make the entire design feel too heavy.

Balance between the left and right side stones is especially important. Similar size alone does not make a well-matched pair.

Their color, transparency, height, outline, light distribution, and proportions must flow naturally together. Two individually beautiful stones do not necessarily create harmony when placed within the same design.

The Design Possibilities of Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds offer greater freedom to compare different shapes and sizes and to find combinations suited to a particular design.

But the wider the range of choices, the more important a discerning eye becomes.

A grading report alone cannot reveal how a stone will influence the final character of a piece. Its true role becomes visible only when the stone is viewed in motion and placed beside the intended center stone.

What I Will Be Looking for in Hong Kong

At the Hong Kong Jewellery Fair, I will not simply be searching for the largest or most brilliant diamonds.

One of my most important missions will be to find beautifully matched pairs of side stones that quietly elevate the center stone while completing the balance and lines of the design.

The beauty of a jewel is not determined by size alone.

The finest side stones do not demand attention for themselves. Instead, they reveal the strengths of the center stone and leave a lasting impression of the piece as a whole.
